. Goodness |
|
|
|
2a. How does a Christian
set standards of conduct? |
|
Your
Christian life brings you to a new standard or moral
excellence or goodness. You will now desire to live a good
life. Jesus Christ has planted this new desire for goodness
within you. Many of your old patterns of behavior now seem
either out of place or plainly wrong. As you grow in Christ, a
new lifestyle will emerge that is pleasing to God and
satisfying to you. |
|
Romans 6:1-23 |
1What
shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may
increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we
live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all
of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into
his death? 4We were therefore buried with him
through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too
may live a new life.
5If we have been united with him like this in his
death, we will certainly also be united with him in his
resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was
crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- 7because
anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we
will also live with him. 9For we know that since
Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no
longer has mastery over him. 10The death he died,
he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives
to God.
11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but
alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not
let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil
desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to
sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves
to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and
offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of
righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master,
because you are not under law, but under grace.
15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under
law but under grace? By no means! 16Don't you know
that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as
slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you
are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience,
which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to
God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you
wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were
entrusted. 18You have been set free from sin and
have become slaves to righteousness.
19I put this in human terms because you are weak in
your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of
your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing
wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness
leading to holiness. 20When you were slaves to sin,
you were free from the control of righteousness. 21What
benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now
ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But now
that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to
God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is
eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Colossians 3:1-25 |
1Since,
then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on
things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly
things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden
with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life,
appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your
earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil
desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of
these, the wrath of God is coming.[2]
7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you
once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all
such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy
language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other,
since you have taken off your old self with its practices
10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed
in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11Here
there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised,
barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is
in all.
12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and
dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each
other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one
another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And
over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all
together in perfect unity.
15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be
thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,
and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you
do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in
the Lord.
19Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh
with them.
20Children, obey your parents in everything, for
this pleases the Lord.
21Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they
will become discouraged.
22Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything;
and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their
favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.
23Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for men, 24since you
know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a
reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25Anyone
who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no
favoritism. |

2b. How is
temptation overcome? |
|
Temptation is an enticement to sin. Although it is common to
everyone, temptation by itself is not a sin. Christ Himself
experienced temptation though He never sinned. God does not
promise to remove temptation from you. He does promise to help
you overcome temptation. His power within you is strong enough
to overcome anything. According to Paul, we are more than
Conquerors through Christ Jesus. The disciple John tells us
"The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the
world." (1 John 4:4)
|
|
1 Corinthians 10:13 |
13No
temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And
God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what
you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a
way out so that you can stand up under it.
|
|
Luke
22:40-46 |
40On reaching
the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into
temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's throw
beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if
you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but
yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to
him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish,
he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of
blood falling to the ground.
45When he rose from prayer and went back to the
disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and
pray so that you will not fall into temptation." |
|
Hebrews
2:9-18 |
9 But we see Jesus,
who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with
glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the
grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting
that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should
make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
11Both the one who makes men holy and those who are
made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to
call them brothers. 12He says,
"I will declare your name to my brothers;
in the presence of the congregation I will sing your
praises." 13And again,
"I will put my trust in him." And again he says,
"Here am I, and the children God has given me."]
14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too
shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy
him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil-- 15and
free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their
fear of death. 16For surely it is not angels he
helps, but Abraham's descendants. 17For this reason
he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order
that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in
service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins
of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when
he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being
tempted. |
|
Ephesians 6:13-17 |
13Therefore put on
the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you
may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done
everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the
belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate
of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet
fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16In addition to all this, take up the shield of
faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of
the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and
the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. |
|
James 1:2-4 |
2Consider it pure
joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3because you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish
its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking
anything. |
|
James 4:7 |
7Submit yourselves,
then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. |
|
James 4:10 |
10Humble yourselves
before the Lord, and he will lift you up. |
|
|
|
|
|
2c. What about how you think? |
|
Before you
became a Christian, you looked at things from the worlds point
of view. Now you will find a change taking place within you.
You are beginning to look at things from Gods point of view. A
new desire to do Gods will is growing in you. Christ is
working in you. Satan and your inbred desire to sin will not
give up without a fight but you and Christ are going to win. |
|
Romans 12:2 |
2Do not
conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God's will is--his good,
pleasing and perfect will.
|
|
1 Corinthians 2:16 |
16"For who has
known the mind of the Lord
that he may instruct him?" But we have
the mind of Christ. |
|
Philippians 2:3-8 |
3Do nothing
out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility
consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of
you should look not only to your own interests, but also to
the interests of others.
5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ
Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be
grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death--
even death on a cross! |
|
Philippians 14-15 |
14Do
everything without complaining or arguing, 15so
that you may become blameless and pure, children of God
without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which
you shine like stars in the universe
|
|
Ephesians 4:20-24 |
20You,
however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21Surely
you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the
truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with
regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self,
which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to
be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to
put on the new self, created to be like God in true
righteousness and holiness. |
|
Titus 1:15-16 |
15To the pure, all
things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not
believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and
consciences are corrupted. 16They claim to know
God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable,
disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
|
|
Hebrews 8:10 |
10This is the
covenant I will make with the house of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people. |
|
Romans 8:5-7 |
5Those who live
according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what
that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the
Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The
mind of sinful man is death, but the mind
controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the
sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's
law, nor can it do so. |

2d. How do you maintain the
abundant life? |
|
There are
valleys and trials in the Christian life just as there are in
life without Christ. The difference is that God is always
there to help you through the difficulties. He teaches the
principles of living which keep you from unnecessary pitfalls.
Deliberate sin will keep you from living the abundant life.
You must stand firm in what you are learning from Gods Word.
If you accept the vain thought and ideologies of others, they
will rob you of your abundant life. |
|
John 10:10 |
10The thief comes
only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may
have life, and have it to the full. |
|
Hebrews 1:8-9 |
8But
about the Son he says,
"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,
and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.
9You have loved righteousness and hated
wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your
companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy."
|
|
Psalms 35:9 |
9 Then my soul will
rejoice in the LORD
and delight in his salvation. |
|
John 20:31 |
31But these are
written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
|
|
1 John 1:9 |
9If we confess our
sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness. |
|
John 14:15 |
15"If you love me,
you will obey what I command.
|
|
John 14:23-24 |
23Jesus replied,
"If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will
love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
24He who does not love me will not obey my
teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to
the Father who sent me. |
|
Proverbs 12:28 |
28 In the way of
righteousness there is life;
along that path is immortality. |
|
John 15:1-11 |
1"I am the true
vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off
every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch
that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more
fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the
word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I
will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it
must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you
remain in me.
5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man
remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart
from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not
remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and
withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and
burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in
you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This
is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing
yourselves to be my disciples.
9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands,
you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's
commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you
this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be
complete.
