Abortion
God wants to
bring peace, forgiveness, and joy to your life—and He will
if you will allow Him. The matter that is distressing
you—the taking of life through abortion and anything else
that separates you from God—needs to be confessed to the
Lord, pleading the blood of Christ (Ephesians 1:7, Romans
3:25, 1 John 1:7) with its power to remove sin and guilt
from anyone who asks. There is no question about God's
forgiving, but sometimes we are not willing to commit our
sin to Him for forgiveness.
|
7In him we have
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
in accordance with the riches of God's grace
8that he lavished on us
with all wisdom and understanding.
9And he made known to us
the mystery of his will according to his good
pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,- Ephesians
1:7-9

As we commit
the actions of the past to God, we receive peace, comfort,
and assurance through Christ. We believe that God, through
His Word and the power of His Spirit, can minister peace to
you in the midst of your emotional distress; God's Word
offers us the peace that passes all understanding. As you
fully commit this problem to the Lord, you will begin a new
relationship of hope and comfort in Christ which will assure
you that "there is now no condemnation for those who are in
Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). |

The Bible Says...
|
For You
have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my
mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully
and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And
that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden
from You, When I was made I secret, And skillfully
wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes
saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book
they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When
as yet there were none of them (Psalm 139:14-16).

Q. Abortion is legal, but is it
morally wrong? What about abortion in cases of rape or incest?
That no one should have the right to take the life of the
unborn has been a principle of medicine from ancient times. The
Hippocratic Oath, first formulated as a sworn rule of conduct for
doctors and physicians in ancient Greece some 2,400 years ago,
says, "I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor
suggest such counsel; and in a like manner I will not give a woman
a pessary to induce an abortion."
Even then, four hundred years before the birth of Christ, people
were clamoring for euthanasia and wanting to kill their unborn
babies. If Hippocrates-a pagan physician who believed in all sorts
of mythological gods and goddesses-knew that it was wrong to take
a life, what defense do we have today after the intervening two
millennia of research and learning?
When it comes to abortion, I believe God is pro-choice. Let me
demonstrate that in Scripture. Speaking through Moses, God told
his people: "I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants
may live" (Deut. 30:19). God created us as free moral agents, with
the capacity to choose our course of action. But He certainly gave
us explicit direction for making wise choices: "Choose life."
The Bible places great value on children. They are the "heritage"
of the Lord, His "reward" (Ps. 127:3). The Bible also makes it
clear that a child's life is to be protected, even while the child
is in the mother's womb. Among the ancient Hebrews, penalties were
prescribed against a person who injured a pregnant woman and
thereby caused her to miscarry (Ex. 21:22-23).
God's Word says that if you hurt a pregnant woman and she loses
the baby, you have to pay a penalty-not because it was a "blob of
tissue," as abortion proponents would have us believe, but because
it was a living human being.
Furthermore, God knows us, and even speaks to us, while we are in
the womb. God called both Isaiah and Jeremiah to be prophets while
they were still in the womb (Isa. 49:1, 5; Jer. 1:4-5). Would God
name and ordain a meaningless blob? That unborn child in the womb
is not a blob of flesh but a life sophisticated enough to have a
relationship with God Almighty!
It is tempting to rationalize abortion in dire circumstances, such
as pregnancy resulting from rape or incest. Statistically, such
pregnancies are very rare. If pregnancy does occur, the woman's
trauma and guilt should not be compounded by the taking of
innocent human life. Abortion does not solve the problem of
violence or abuse-it increases the problem. We should punish the
criminal, not the victim.

Q: Why
is abortion such a big issue for Christians? |
|
A: Mr. Billy Graham believes that the
spiritual condition of man is at the root of the abortion issue.
Until man's spiritual condition is changed by the power of Jesus
Christ, we will not find a full solution to this problem. It is
sin that produces the problem of most unwanted pregnancies, as
well as all the other disorders which plague the human race. It is
also sin which produces the mis-belief that women have a "right"
to take the lives of unborn babies. The apostle Paul writes, "The
acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity
and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord,
jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like" (Galatians 5:19-21a).
Life is sacred, and we must seek to protect all human life: the
unborn, the child, the adult, and the aged. Several Bible passages
tell of the sacredness of life and speak to the subject of
abortion. They include Exodus 20:13, 21:22, 23:7; Job 10:8-12;
Psalms 22:10, 51:5, 127:3, 139:13-16; Isaiah 44:1-2, 49:5; and
Jeremiah 1:4-5. From a medical point of view, in the words of a
physician, "The ultimate scientific fact that all must face and
deal with is that nothing, no bits and pieces, will be added to
this living human being from the time of fertilization until the
old man dies—nothing except nutrition. Each of us existed in toto
at that moment. All that we have done since then is to mature."

Q: I
have had an abortion and feel so guilty. Can God
forgive me? |
|
God wants to
bring peace, forgiveness, and joy to your
life—and He will if you will allow Him.
The matter that is distressing you—the
taking of life through abortion and
anything else that separates you from
God—needs to be confessed to the Lord,
pleading the blood of Christ (Ephesians
1:7, Romans 3:25, 1 John 1:7) with its
power to remove sin and guilt from anyone
who asks. There is no question about God's
forgiving, but sometimes we are not
willing to commit our sin to Him for
forgiveness.
As we commit the actions of the past to
God, we receive peace, comfort, and
assurance through Christ. We believe that
God, through His Word and the power of His
Spirit, can minister peace to you in the
midst of your emotional distress; God's
Word offers us the peace that passes all
understanding. As you fully commit this
problem to the Lord, you will begin a new
relationship of hope and comfort in Christ
which will assure you that "there is now
no condemnation for those who are in
Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1).
David was deeply distraught about
overwhelming conditions in his own life
which blurred the sense of God's presence,
but in Psalm 51 he expresses assurance
that the joy and fellowship of the Lord
have become real to him. In other words,
he experienced the unfailing love and
compassion of God in times when he was
plagued with self-condemnation. After
turning a problem over to the Lord, we
often pick the problem up once more and
agonize over it again and again. Instead,
we must decisively choose to leave the
matter with Him and put it out of our
minds, refusing to think about it or dwell
upon it in any way. When thoughts of guilt
come to your mind, say to yourself and
God, "Thank you, Lord, for your great
forgiveness and mercy. I praise you that
you told me to cast this care upon you (1
Peter 5:7), and I have done so. Forgive me
for my worry about this matter; with your
help, I will praise you instead."

Q: My
ex-boyfriend talked me into getting an abortion
several years ago, and I can't get it out of my
mind. I knew it was wrong, although all my
friends told me to go ahead. I can't forgive
myself, and I know God won't forgive me, either.
|
|
Many people may
agree with your friends—but I'm thankful you
know otherwise, for ending the life of the
little child who was growing in you wasn't right
in God's eyes. God's words to Jeremiah apply to
every human being, born or unborn: "Before I
formed you in the womb I knew you" (Jeremiah
1:5).
But you are wrong when you say God can never
forgive you! King David in the Old Testament was
a great and good man in many ways—but later in
life he strayed from God. He committed adultery
with another man's wife, and then to cover up
his sin he arranged for that man to be killed in
battle (see 2 Samuel 11). Adultery ... lying ...
murder ... How could God ever forgive him?
And yet God did forgive him! David honestly
faced his sin, repented of it and sought God's
forgiveness: "Against you, you only, have I
sinned and done what is evil in your sight"
(Psalm 51:4). And when he did this, God forgave
him and cleansed him of his sin. David could
then truly say, "Blessed is he whose
transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are
covered" (Psalm 32:1).
This can be your experience as well. God loves
you, and Christ died to take away every sin you
ever committed—every one. Don't let your
emotions or anything else keep you from Christ.
Ask Him to come into your life today, because in
Him "we have redemption, the forgiveness of
sins" (Colossians 1:14).
