Musings of a  Missionary

by: Vivien Gatpandan

It's June! As we enter the half way point of 2007, take a moment with me and reflect on Switchfoot's This is Your Life (2003) lyrics:

This is your life are you who you want to be?
This is your life is it everything you dreamed that it would be,

When the world was younger and you had everything to lose, Everything to lose.

Are you who you want to be?

We all had dreams. And then there was reality. And there was our past. And there is NOW. Are you who you want to be - at this moment?

As young children, some of us may have had it good. Personally, I came from a loving close-knit family with supportive parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins who saw me through my growing up years. And then there are some of you who did not have it that way. Some of you may not know who your parents are, or you could have been born in an abusive home, or in a family where drugs was a way of life.

When we started seeing what was out there outside of our sphere and our comfort zone, you may at some point have said, “I’ll NEVER do that!” or “I don’t want to be like that!” Where are you now? Are you “all grown up” now and are you really not doing what you said you didn’t want to do? Are you who you want to be?

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

Fortunately for us, we need not dwell on the past. We can’t go back to the past, but we definitely could learn from it. What’s so great is that we have hope in Jesus Christ! When you accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour of your life, you became a new creation! Does it happen overnight? Hmm…for some, maybe. For most, it takes time.

Our old selves like to creep in once in a while. Once a thief always a thief. Once a drug dealer, always a drug dealer. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. Once an abusive spouse or parent, always abusive. NO!! That’s not what the Bible says! God, the Alpha & the Omega, the Beginning and the End, knows what was and what is to come? Who would you trust more and who are you going to believe? A science that is continually evolving or the truth that can set you free? Are you doing your share in letting Christ be the driver of your life and you following and obeying what He asks of you?

We had goals as kids. Do you have goals as Christians? What are you doing about it?

“Is it everything you dreamed that it would be?”

What do we want to pass on to the future generation?

We will tell the next generation

About the Lord’s power and his great deeds

And the wonderful things he has done…

So that the next generation might learn them

And in turn should tell their children.

In this way they also will put their trust in God.

 (Psalm 78:4, 6-7)

The fact that it’s an ugly world out there does not mean we have to live in fear. God is with us. Through the struggles that we’ve gone through and still go through, God can be in control, we just need to let Him take a hold of our lives. We can’t change the past, but God can change the future.

At Teen Challenge, we come alongside men and women who have strayed from God’s path. Why does Teen Challenge have an 86% success rate for people who completed the program? Because we don’t just cure the symptoms, we look and dig deep for the cause – the stronghold of sin in each person’s lives.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: (1Peter 3:15)

Hi everyone! It's a new month and I just want to praise God for all His Grace and Mercy. His love and faithfulness are unfailing. We have been out here for two months now and it is going by faster than we can keep up. There are so many things to be grateful for. I do not know where to begin.

My role here has changed a little. Because there is such a great need in the administrative areas of this ministry, I have been tasked to handle the role of Administrator which is a fancy word for office manager. My main role is still a servant of God.

I am very happy for the opportunity to teach during Wednesday morning chapel services. We are currently marching through Mark and just finished chapter 6. It is awesome to see Gods Word encourage, inspire and teach these men.

Another exciting development is that Vivien has enrolled her first student. The Grand Opening celebration was today Sunday, June 10th and it was a great success. Please keep her in prayer as she begins this new Women's ministry here in Freedom California.

I also want to praise God for the exciting work that God is doing between this Teen Challenge and Calvary Chapel. Calvary Chapel Modesto has recently agreed to donate teaching materials, extra CD's and DVD's. Calvary Chapel Santa Cruz has agreed to partner with the Men's Program here in Watsonville. Calvary Chapel Aptos and Calvary Chapel Watsonville are currently supporting the Women's Center with monthly donations. And Vivien and myself are so very grateful to announce that Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara has encouraged us tremendously by sending us a one-time donation to help support our move out here as missionaries.

We thank you all for all your prayers. Many have been answered and we are seeing the miracles of God on a daily basis. The battle is on and this is a siege. We are in the process of wearing down the stronghold that Satan has over many of the lives that come in to Teen Challenge. It is not an overnight change. these hearts are hardened and not all have been broken. We wear them down with the love of Jesus. We offer them a free bed, meal and lots of unconditional love....

...They come in trying to figure out what's in it for us or what our motives are. But as they get to see the unconditional love of Jesus through us, they begin to wonder and question and some begin to believe.

Thanks again for all your prayers. May the grace of the Lord be upon all you who seek Him out. And always pray for your local Urban Missionaries. Revival can start in your own backyard and America needs Jesus no less than any other nation in the world.

In His Service,

Geno Quiroz

Praise Reports!
  • God has provided a means for us to receive financial aid so that we can continue our ministry here without having any financial distractions.

  • God has shown us that as long as we are obedient to Him, all other things will fall into place (including our wedding plans & finances)

  • Chris B. (last email) now has received the medical aid he needed, in order to get sleep, and now gets an average 6-8 hours of good sleep every night. And he does not need the anti-depressants the doctor prescribed. He no longer thinks about suicide like he used to. We are working on his social security and helping him to consider alternative job training (computers?) so that he can have something to fall back on in case he is ineligible for SS. Although, he still has yet to put His trust in Jesus and needs prayer.

  • Roberta is Vivien's first student and she has been more of a helper and program shaper than she has been a student. God sent exactly what Vivien needed. Roberta is a blessing and works hard to help Vivien get the program ready for more students.

  • God showed me this morning that "Serving does not mean giving a student (disciple) everything he/she asks for, but rather Serving means to be obedient to the position and calling God has chosen, equipped and enabled me to do, so that God can provide to the student as He see's fit"

  • The leaders in my dorm have begun to meet to gather every night to pray for our staff, students, town, graduates and dropouts. I pray that it continues.

Prayer Requests...
  • Pray that God would continue to draw us closer to him and that our desire to pray and read His word would only grow with each passing morning.

  • Pray that Chris B. would put his trust in Jesus and that he would see that Jesus is the reason for His improving situation.

  • Pray that Roberta would continue to be a blessing to Vivien and that she would consider her calling and potential ministry at Teen Challenge.

  • Pray that God would bring Vivien the house mother they are looking for at the Freedom Women's Center.

  • Pray for Matt Williams who had an accident with a rototiller on Friday and severed several tendons in his right calf. Doctors expect him to be on crutches for at least four weeks but God willing, he should be able to walk again.

  • Pray that God would bless our Wedding Planning and that He would guide us and reveal to us as to when He wants us to get married.

  • Pray for unity in the leadership and that God would remove any sin from within the camp and that He would help us to seek and be obedient to His will for this center and the students He has brought to this center.

  • Please pray that we would all be usable vessels for our Lords work here on this earth.
